Building your email list needs to be one of your top marketing objectives. If you have a site that is struggling to gain traction, a strong focus on list building can help to break the plateau. Your list gives you an audience for traffic generation, social shares, and profitable product launches.
Many new online network marketers don’t initially focus on list building tactics. Instead, they concentrate on creating great content, and generating traffic. Both of which are essential… However, much of the energy spent crafting content and generating traffic will go to waste. Hubspot reports that “96% of visitors are not ready to make a purchase on their first visit.”
That means they won’t become a customer, won’t buy your ebook, won’t buy your software, and won’t use your products or services. Sadly, despite having wonderful content, many visitors to your site will not return, particularly if your business hasn’t yet built up a brand.
Therefore, the trick to growing your business quickly, is to concentrate on list building from the start.
But first… why should you even bother building an email list in the first place? Here are 3 reasons why:
You get permission
When you get someone to join your mailing list, you are essentially getting permission to communicate and continue marketing to them via email. By subscribing, they are telling you that they want to hear from you and what you have to offer.
You OWN your email list
You don’t own your Facebook Page… Facebook does. You don’t own your Twitter profile… Twitter does. And you don’t own your Google+ page either. I think you know who owns that one.
The point is, when you build an email list of people who are interested in what you have to offer, you actually own that list of people. It’s an asset you can use to build your online business.
You control traffic
List Building is the best way to get people to come back to your website. Once you’ve successfully gotten people to subscribe, all you have to do is send an email out to your subscribers with a link back to your latest post or information product.
So, what are some of the key tactics that can help you build that valuable email list?
List Building Tactic #1: Understand who you want to attract (target market)
Like every other marketing activity you plan to do, you must understand who you are trying to attract and why.
List Building Tactic #2: Use an email marketing service
There are two major reasons for this. First, you will get more subscribers if you indicate that you are using a service because it means they can unsubscribe safely when they want to. Second, the days of sending email from your computer directly to your list, even if you have been diligent at getting permission, is over. No one trusts email messages coming from a random source. AWeber is the email marketing service I recommend to network marketers; 1. Because I have been with them since I started and trust and use it every day 2. Their features are very impressive.
List Building Tactic #3: Make sure your sign up form is very visible and on every page
Make your sign up form easy to find by putting your sign up form at the top of your left or right sidebars. Don’t just have it on a separate page that I have to consciously find. WordPress makes it easy to do with widgets. Drop your form in a text widget and you are ready to roll.
List Building Tactic #4: Put your sign up form on your Facebook Business Page
Add your sign up form to your landing tab on your Facebook Page to encourage new fans to sign up as well as like your Facebook page.
List Building Tactic #5: Make the form simple
If you’re trying to build an opt-in, permission based email list, you only need the email address. I like to personalize my emails, so I also ask for at least their first name, which I find most gladly provide. But don’t ask for what you don’t need. Less is more in email list building tactics.
List Building Tactic #6: Don’t be overly aggressive in how you encourage people to sign up
Pop up sign up forms do increase sign up rates, but if you don’t like them, don’t thrust them onto your visitors. Remember point 1 – understand your market and whether these techniques will work or hurt you more than help.
Pro Tip: The trick is to use them wisely. Don’t just fire them 2 seconds after your visitor lands on your page. Exit intent pop-ups, that appear when the visitor is about to close the tab are less intrusive and will provide better results in the long run.
List Building Tactic #7: Include an opt-in form on the About Page
Here’s one page that often goes overlooked as a candidate for including email opt-in. You guessed it, it’s the About page.
List Building Tactic #8: Put a link within the Footer
What’s the one element of the page that repeats from page to page, to page? No, it’s not the menu. It’s the footer. Imagine putting an opt-in link just once, and effectively applying this to every single page on your blog.
If you collect personal information on your website, make sure you have a policy that tells people what you do with that information. Between a solid policy and an email service, you should gain your visitors’ trust.
List Building Tactic #10: Put your past email newsletters on your website
That valuable information that you provide in your daily, weekly, or monthly newsletter should be archived on your website to encourage new visitors to subscribe if they like what they see.
List Building Tactic #11: Create an offer they can’t refuse
Knowing your target market helps you develop the content you need to attract them to you and then provide you with a valuable asset: their email address.
When you have built an email list from the ground up with people who are interested in what you have to offer, you can then provide them with information, offers, events, news and other types of activities that they will find helpful. Remember that it is a privilege that they gave you something as valuable as their email address. Once you have their permission, do not abuse it.
