So, you are working from home and you want to take your business online? Awesome! 🙂
One of the great things about starting and operating your OWN online home-based business is that you get to decide what it means, how big and “successful” it will get, and exactly where you want to take your business.
However, the usual day of an online network marketer can be pretty exhausting. The majority of folks are still juggling either a full time job or like me, other businesses.
You have children, maybe a spouse and a family that require your attention and nevertheless, you can’t let life get in the way of your goals of having a successful online business.
So the question was, are you taking your business seriously? Or better yet, do YOU want people to take your business opportunity seriously?
If you answered yes… which I hope you did? Then you MUST take your business seriously and stop treating it like a money making hobby or a pastime but a real, legitimate business and you must develop others while you develop your business.
Let’s go ahead and cover some of the business basics that you should have in place if you want your business to be taken seriously.
A Website or Blog
Many think an online business is something that can be done via social media.
This is very common with direct sales reps and MLM professionals.
They promote their business opportunity and products all throughout social media all day long. But they are lacking a website that will brand them and position them as experts in their niche.
Same goes for some affiliate marketers. They simply promote their affiliate links in groups and on their personal social media pages.
Can you generate business this way? Sure. But is this approach sustainable?
Sooner or later you will saturate your friends with your biz opportunity and they will become immune to your promotional posts.
But beyond that, your website gives you a platform to position your business for global reach allowing you to run ads to reach these people.
Another very important reason for having a website is the legitimacy it gives you with your audience and customers.

A Marketing Plan
No, I don’t mean those super intimidating marketing plans.
What I mean is, what marketing activities do you have planned for this year?
Do you want to launch a virtual personal fitness coaching program?
If so, how will you advertise it? What marketing materials will you need? Or maybe you want to grow your email list by 500 names in the first quarter of the year.
What is your plan to accomplish this? Have a marketing plan for your business.

Focus On Income Producing Activities (IPAs)
This is a problem that many fall into when looking at starting their own online business, as I did too at the beginning.
We get caught up in all the little busy work that doesn’t actually focus on any activities that create the income that we are looking to make.
Sometimes it is out of fear of doing it wrong, sometimes it is just simple procrastinating, but whatever it is – we need to make sure that we FOCUS on making sure that the majority of our time is in taking activities that actual produce income – IPA’s!
Take a look at your schedule and see if you are allocating the majority of the time to your IPA’s in your business.
I may work from home most of the time when I don’t have to meet with a potential customer, but every morning I wake and commute to work (my living room), go straight into the kitchen to make a pot a coffee… drop my son and daughter off at school and I’m ready to work by no later than 8AM every morning.
No ifs, ands, or buts about it. I have a list of tasks that I need to prioritize for the day and those are what I focus on.
Whether that is;
- Creating a new blog post
- Sending out a guest blog post to another site
- Creating Facebook ads
- Personal education and personal self-development
- Calling prospects
- Or answering Q&A on social media or our blog
Whatever I have designated as a priority for the day that is what I focus on.
The point is that Income Producing Activities are those ACTIONS that move you and your business toward your income goals.
Have a task list that’s tied to your strategic business goals, and trust that great things are built from many small steps. Make the steps small, doable, and supportive of your business strategy.
And remember, only YOU can decide what your income producing activities are going to be.
Side Note: I’m not saying that once you’re business is actually producing income you can’t decide to spend a Monday morning by the pool or that you can’t take a day off to spend it with your kids here and there.

Some of us stumble into our online home business, while others put a lot of thought and research and investigation into which business to choose and all of the other particulars.
Regardless of how we get ourselves started – we may get so wrapped up in the daily details that we don’t really put a lot of planning and thought into managing growth and building the business as seriously as we want it.
Maybe you’ve really never intended for your business to be sole support for your family and it is something to do while your kids are small and you plan to re-enter the traditional work force at a later date; or maybe you are getting ready to retire and want to wind down and perhaps only work on your business for a year or two and quit.
The important thing is to decide what it is that you want to do with YOUR business and not let the outside pressures, advice and “accepted” ways of doing things get in the way of your decision-making.
Allow for the reality that your plans and intentions may change, but you still get to be in charge.
You may find that you are not cut out for this specific type of online business and need to embrace some flexibility to make a change; or you may find you have a real gift for online business and are able to “leave your day job” to work full time from home.
Again, keep what you want and how you want your online home business to fit into the rest of your life at the top of your considerations so you are able to run your business instead of letting your business run you!
