Allow us to talk about a condition that can be tough to avoid in the world of online network marketing. It’s called the overconsumption of too much content and it can create havoc in all parts of your mindset and your online business.
Reading, studying, and supporting others is essential and beneficial – but at what point is it too much content?
Let’s jump right in shall we..?
5 Signs You Need to Stop Overconsuming Too Much Content
You Use It as A Way to Avoid Work
The initial sign that you are starting to overconsume too much content is that your actual work output begins to diminish.
This is hazardous territory due to the fact that at the end of the day you are supposed to be running a legitimate business.
And if you are investing all your time reading, studying, researching trying to support how other people run their businesses, you aren’t in fact putting money in the bank.
When I initially started blogging back in 2013, I was guilty of this.
I reviewed, researched, and read too much content from business blogs, because I knew my design skills were strong but my actual business expertise was not.
And yes, most of the content I looked up was useful, yet it seldom got put into practice and I simply filed it away in the back of my brain.
I get it, I truly do.
You have probably been told from day one to brush up on skills and knowledge where you may not be as self-confident – and the Internet is a fantastic tool for doing just that – however you also need to put your content into the world and create and just go for it.
I’ve had far more success “figuring it out” than reading blog post after blog post telling me “what to do.”
Chances are what you’re truly doing is holding yourself physically and psychologically back from those initial steps because you are simply afraid of taking them.
Which is entirely understandable!
I don’t know of any other single business owner out there that wasn’t frightened at some point in the process of building a successful business.
Do you know want to know a simple tip to overcoming this fear?
Stop reading too much content and just go for it, Figure it out as you go, and start saying “YES” more.
Don’t let overconsuming too much content stand in the path of your success and dreams.
Consuming too much content will merely make it appear like you’re “working” but in actually it’s not converting into money in the bank.
Looking For a Way to Re-Brand Yourself
Another sign that you are overconsuming too much content is that you continually looking for a way to re-brand yourself.
This should automatically be a red flag for you that you are overconsuming too much content.
If you find yourself constantly watching your peer’s blog, website, or social media and find yourself wanting to imitate their brand – avert yourself from the computer screen.
I know how easy it can be to see someone else’s success and want and in fact crave their success for your own business. I know it’s easy to see their attractive images, their awesome customer work, and their outstanding Instagram feed and think “I can do that.”
Yet, really listen to this, you can’t.
That persons business created all of those pieces of content and features for a reason – to attract THEIR ideal target audience and buyer persona.
For you to simply take those pieces of content for yourself isn’t sensible or ethical for that matter. Rather, turn off the consuming of too much content, and take time to figure out your ideal target audience.
Find out exactly how you can serve them and exactly who they are.
Establish your very own unique brand and marketing strategy that accommodates your ideal target customer.
That is a much better time investment for you and likewise generally puts you in a position for success.
You Constantly Change Your Products or Services
This is shared with the prior point, yet another sign of you overconsuming too much content is becoming “preoccupied” with every single new idea or product that comes out. In other words, shiny object syndrome.
Possibly someday you plan on being a social media strategist, and the next day a branding specialist, and the next day a wellness advocate, etc., etc.
I get it, you may be competent or resourceful in all of those things – and other people may make them seem really trendy and enticing – however your time would be better consumed with getting meditative and really look at how your skills could feasibly benefit your target audience or ideal customer.
When you’re too busy being influenced or too consumed with too much content from others, it quickly starts to cast a shadow of doubt over you that makes you insecure if you’re on the right track or not (and more likely to waver, alter, or change your own ideas).
I get it. This occurs every day from: the clothes we wear, how we style our hair, our beliefs, our values, etc.
However, I can guarantee you this, when you start conducting your business in a way that feels good and helpful for you, success starts flowing in.
Your Voice Changes
This is one that I see take place a lot when people start overconsuming too much content.
Much like your visuals, it’s very easy to become over-influenced with the way someone who appears to be more successful delivers their content.
Perhaps it’s the words they use, the quirks they have, or maybe the way in which they construct or structure their sentences.
Possibly it’s the illustrations they typically use, the stories they tell, or the approach they use to insert their persona. Whatever it is – the reason you like it so much from them is simply because it feels unique and genuine and authentic to you.
Fortunately for you, you already have a unique voice built in. You have actually developed and rather established this unique voice over your entire life.
You have stories, key-phrases, and methods of presenting content that is both unique and special to you. And that my friend is what people value and want to listen to.
Nobody wants to read my blog, head over to your blog and then read the exact same content, and then head over to another blog and again read the exact same content, and have all of them be precisely in the same voice.
We can chat about related topics very differently since your viewpoint, experience, and journey are probably going to be very different from mine. Yet the topics are still the same.
This is partly why I have had to stop consuming too much content from other network marketing professionals almost entirely. I worry about becoming too influenced by their crafty metaphors or fantastic examples.
It’s unavoidable that we will talk about similar topics and issues, because online network marketing is such a large industry, nonetheless we can provide it in unique ways which relate to our specific target audiences in different ways.
You Feel Lacking
The utter worst part about overconsuming too much content is the doubt, inadequacy, and judgement trap that it draws you into.
Don’t get me mistaken, I am all for industry competition and I do my best to support and adore my peers’ success – however despite all that, it’s all too easy to feel a stitch of “dang, I must be doing this wrong,” when you see other people moving faster than you or getting to milestones in advance of you.
Were only human. I get it. It’s going to happen (sometimes more then you want it to).
To stay focused on the positive, and the community, I instead focus on building strong relationships and connections with real people in my niche and larger industry.
I focus on actual communication and building a friendship versus just reading their blog non-stop.
This nurtures a real connection and potential for growth and feelings of appreciation and happiness, versus reading their blog and having no concept of who the actual person is that created the content.
If you are feeling filled with doubt over reading other people’s content, the solution is easy: stop reading it. STOP overconsuming too much content.
Rather, find other methods to connect and show support.
To me, that is more supportive and more community-building compared to reading their blog, getting irritated, and feeling resentful.
